At Home in the Community was established as a charity and Limited Company in 1990 to provide high quality support and care for people with learning disabilities in the North East of England.
The organisation was formed in 1990 at a time when the government and local authorities had come to recognise the need for sustainable alternatives to long hospital residencies for people with learning disabilities.
At Home provided a solution through a partnership arrangement with housing associations by acquiring houses in residential areas and towns to help integrate people with learning disabilities within their own local communities, if possible. The first house was opened in Walker in Newcastle in 1992 and was followed by projects in Hexham, Haltwhistle, Gosforth, Prudhoe and Dinnington.
In recent years commissioning authorities have been increasingly moving towards Independent Supported Living schemes whereby clients are assisted to live in their own homes or in acquired premises which are tailored to specific needs. At Home has again sought to offer its professional services to clients with this remit.
At Home currently supports learning disabled clients through a range of projects and employs 70 full and part time staff. At Home in the Community’s head office is Callerton House, 573 Durham Road, Gateshead, NE9 5EY.
